Flood Leaves ‘River Monster’ Stranded In Fence

In May, waters around Dallas rose above normal levels. The Trinity River, which runs through the city, had retained so much rainfall that its depth more than doubled to 40 feet by the end of the month. Among the destroyed homes and human lives lost, wildlife were also affected by the rising waters.

Andrés Ruzo, a geoscientist and National Geographic explorer, captured this image of a recently deceased fish who’d gotten carried away by the floodwater — and, sadly, lodged in a fence.

The fish is part of a 100-million-year-old species. And even though he has a bit of a monstrous appearance, he’s of course not a river monster at all. He’s a juvenile longnose gar, a freshwater fish with a sizable population of over 100,000 adults in North America. Though other subspecies of gar can reach up to 10 feet long, this particular fish is 2 feet, which is about the subspecies’s average size.

Being consumed alive by a giant snake sounds like the stuff of nightmares, but for conservationist, filmmaker and “Eaten Alive” star Paul Rosolie, it was a personal goal — one that he’s now fulfilled. The question is: Why?

And as it turns out, the answer is relatively simple.

“[I thought], I want to do something that’s just going to grab people’s attention,” Rosolie explained during a Tuesday morning visit to TODAY.

“Eaten Alive” airs Dec. 7 at 9 p.m. ET on Discovery.

Minnesota Iceman: Mysterious Frozen Creature From ’60s Resurfaces At Museum (EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS)

Then, just as quickly as the 6-foot-tall frozen beast surfaced, it vanished — until now.

Earlier this year, Steve Busti — owner of the Museum of the Weird in Austin, Texas — bought the ice man from the family of its original owner in Minnesota. He’s going to once again reveal the ape-like creature to the world starting July 3 at his museum.

Before his big purchase, Busti spent the last two years researching the Minnesota Iceman and trying to pin down its location. He found that the original exhibitor, Frank Hansen, had it in a freezer at his home for decades after its last showing. It’s still unclear why the big, hairy popsicle’s tour abruptly ended.

Somehow, Hansen managed to keep Mr. Freeze out of the public eye until he died about 10 years ago. Busti also learned that rumors of the Minnesota Iceman being discovered in Siberia were untrue.

In the 1960s, the “Minnesota Iceman” was paraded from mall to fairground, leaving rumors of Bigfoot, missing links and government conspiracy in its wake.

A 105-year-old Texas woman who worked a life of physical labor and mothered seven children revealed the secret to her longevity: bacon.

“I love bacon, I eat it everyday,” Pearl Cantrell told NBC affiliate KRBC when asked the secret to living so long. “I don’t feel as old as I am, that’s all I can say,” Cantrell added.

Cantrell, who lives in central Texas and still dances, also told KRBC that her 105th birthday party was a three-day affair with more than 200 guests.

When Oscar Mayer found out about Cantrell’s love of bacon, it sent one of its iconic Wienermobiles to make a bacon delivery to Cantrell’s home. (You can watch video of Cantrell riding around her Texas town in the Wienermobile on local CBS affiliate KHOU.)

A gelatinous, semi-opaque slime that appeared mysteriously in an English nature park has proved a brain teaser for area scientists. Others have posited that the material may have extraterrestrial origins.

The substance, which some are calling a “jelly,” was found at the RSPB Ham Wall Nature reserve in Somerset, according to Yahoo! News.

Steve Hughes, site manager at Ham Wall, said the jelly was unlike anything he’d ever seen before.
