Quick: What’s the cube root of 61,629,875?
Stumped? Shakuntala Devi, the woman known as the “Human Computer,” could tell you, and probably faster than any mathematical computer could.
Devi, who passed away on April 21 at age 83 in her hometown of Bangalore, India, toured the world as a prodigy for much of her life, making appearances on radio, television and in theaters, the New York Times reports.
In a 1977 appearance at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Devi found the 23rd root of a 201-digit number in just 50 seconds, besting a slowpoke Univac computer that took 62 seconds to make the same calculation. The root of a number (“X”) is equal to another number (“Y”) that can be multiplied by itself a given number of times to equal “X.” So the 23rd root of “X” equals “Y” multiplied by itself 23 times.

Shakuntala Devi (November 4, 1929 – April 21, 2013), Indian mental calculator known as the ‘Human Computer,’ has died.

A hi-tech bracelet could soon be helping civil rights and aid workers at risk of being kidnapped or killed.
When triggered, the personal alarm uses phone and sat-nav technology to warn that its wearer is in danger.
Warnings are sent in the form of messages to Facebook and Twitter to rally support and ensure people do not disappear without trace.
The first bracelets are being given out this week and funding is being sought to make many more.
The bracelets have been developed by the Civil Rights Defenders campaign group in a bid to help workers in war zones and other areas of conflict.

Those who eagerly await the latest tweets from Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Justin Bieber may soon have one more reason to tie their musical interests to Twitter: The social network will reportedly use a recent acquisition to set up a Twitter Music app.
Technology from the music discovery company We Are Hunted, which Twitter bought last year, will reportedly serve as the app’s foundation. Soundcloud will provide music streaming services with videos courtesy of Vevo, according to published reports.
The Twitter Music app for iOS devices may debut later this month.

Watch the University of Edinburgh’s Harald Haas discuss how future wireless data can be transmitted through lightbulbs.
When we use smartphones or tablet PCs to surf the internet, check emails, share pictures, engage in social networking, or store information in a cloud, we make use of wireless communications technology.
Traditionally, all the information we move around with these devices is transmitted using radio frequency spectrum. The more data we generate, the more radio frequency spectrum we need.
It is forecast that by the year 2015, we will transmit six exabytes — six billion, billion bytes — every month through wireless networks. This is a ten-fold increase on the amount of data we send now.

Most of us at one time or another wished we could find more information on someone. Before the internet, the only option most people had was using a local telephone book. Those with more money and determination could pay companies which specialized in searching or background checks. Today there are many online services which make locating someone a breeze.

Along with the rapid rise in identity theft has come the explosion of a specialized and sophisticated form of theft: tax identity theft.
During the 2011 tax processing year, roughly 940,000 tax returns were filed fraudulently. This year the number will likely reach 1 million. Even the IRS’ own taxpayer advocate, Nina Olson, says the IRS is woefully incapable of handling the boom.
