A small robot has uncovered three 2,000-year-old chambers under an ancient temple in Mexico, archaeologists from the National Anthropology and History Institute announced this week.
The robot, named Tlaloc II-TC after Mexico’s ancient god of rain, found the chambers under the Temple of the Feathered Serpent (also called the Temple of Quetzalcoatl) in the Mesoamerican ruins of Teotihuacan, which is just 30 miles from Mexico City. The ancient city, thought to have been established around 100 BC, had more than 100,000 inhabitants at its peak, but had long been abandoned before the Aztecs arrived in the 1300s.

Kirsty Allen was your normal, healthy young mother. Mom to Ebony, 6, and Adam, 2, the 29-year-old from Annfield Plain, County Durham, UK worked part-time as an office administrator. She was looking forward to a ceremony at St. Joseph’s Church in Stanley, where she’d be named godmother to her brother Karl’s 5-month-old son Austen. Tragically, that rite never happened. The family still gathered at the church, but under a much darker circumstance: Kirsty’s funeral.

On Wednesday, archeologists revealed the remains of an ancient arts center underneath Rome dating back to 123 AD, according to the Guardian.
Emperor Hadrian is believed to have funded “the Athenaeum,” as it was known at the time; it was a 900-seat complex created to promote arts and culture, CBS News reports. Archeologists discovered the arts center during excavations for a new subway line to run through the Italian capital.
“Hadrian’s auditorium is the biggest find in Rome since the Forum was uncovered in the 1920s,” said Rossella Rea, an archeologist working on the project.

Italian archeologists unveiled Wednesday the site discovered during excavations of a bustling downtown piazza in preparation for a new subway line. The partially dug complex, dating back to the 2nd century A.D., is believed to have been funded by Emperor Hadrian.

With chatter about the Mayan apocalypse intensifying as Dec. 21 approaches, you may have seen that while the ancient Mayan calendar “ends” on that day, the Maya themselves would not have seen that as the end of the world. But how does the Mayan calendar work, anyway?
It’s not as confusing as it might seem. The ancient Maya kept time in a very different way than we do today, and their hieroglyph-heavy calendar can seem daunting at first glance. But the basic principle is simply that the Maya were counting the days.
.

The Mayan Long Count Calendar, which did not predict a doomsday, included dates
written out as five hieroglyphs separated by four periods.
