Antibiotic resistance poses a catastrophic threat to medicine and could mean patients having minor surgery risk dying from infections that can no longer be treated, Britain’s top health official said on Monday.
Sally Davies, the chief medical officer for England, said global action is needed to fight antibiotic, or antimicrobial, resistance and fill a drug “discovery void” by researching and developing new medicines to treat emerging, mutating infections.
Only a handful of new antibiotics have been developed and brought to market in the past few decades, and it is a race against time to find more, as bacterial infections increasingly evolve into “superbugs” resistant to existing drugs.

In a cautionary report on Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned of a deadly new virus that has sickened more than a dozen people and killed eight in the Arabian peninsula and the U.K. so far.
No cases of the new virus — a coronavirus that experts say had previously never been seen in humans — have been reported in the United States. Still, the CDC has advised anyone visiting countries in or near the Arabian peninsula, including Iraq, Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, to see a doctor if a fever or symptoms of a lower respiratory illness develop within 10 days of their travels.

High-intensity interval workouts have long been praised for their weight-loss benefit, but when it comes to overall health, simply moving for longer periods of time every day might be best, researchers from Masstricht University say. Their findings are published in the journal PLOS ONE.
When normal-weight participants burned a similar amount of calories through either short, intense workouts or longer periods of standing and walking, the group that stood and walked more had improved cholesterol levels and insulin response compared to the vigorous exercisers. This effect wasn’t easy to come by, however: The group that completed longer periods of low-intensity exercise substituted six hours of sitting with four hours of walking and two hours of standing every day.

How I Gained It: Two back-to-back pregnancies, postpartum depression and binge eating to cope with my feelings. Every day was a struggle for me. I could barely keep up with my boys. I was always tired, out of breath and absolutely miserable. I was ashamed and embarrassed and dodged as many family photos as I could.
Breaking Point: My son Caleb took off running from me at the mall. I was so big that I could not catch up to him. I will never forget the panic mixed with that burning sensation in my throat. That was it. I made up my mind to do something about my weight because I had let myself get out of control long enough.

Last week, a New Zealand coroner linked the 2010 death of Natasha Harris, a 31-year-old mother of eight, to health complications brought on by her excessive consumption of Coca-Cola.
The coroner, David Crerar, did not hold the Coca-Cola company responsible for the woman’s death. However, he recommended that warning labels be placed on soft drinks in an effort to educate the public about the health risks associated with overconsumption of sugary, caffeinated beverages.

A powerful Alzheimer’s fighter could be right in your mug.
A new study in the Journal of Biological Chemistry shows that an antioxidant called EGCG, which is found in green tea and red wine, is able to stop amyloid-beta proteins — known to play a role in Alzheimer’s — from attaching to and killing brain cells in a lab setting.
The study is based on the notion that amyloid proteins form ball-like clumps, which are not uniform in size. These amyloid clumps then bind to the outer proteins of brain cells and kill them. However, the researchers wanted to see if changing the shape of the amyloid clumps — by applying EGCG– altered their ability to bind to the brain cells.

How I Gained It: My story begins around late 2008. I was enduring a bad marriage and a very sick toddler with kidney and bladder problems. Food was what comforted me through these dark times, especially pasta, sweets and anything chocolate.
Breaking Point: I decided to change my life for the better and put myself on a path towards becoming healthier. It was especially important to me to do this for my children. The “new” me was about to start.

How I Gained It: I started to gain weight in the early 80s by eating anything and everything.
I was a 60 in the waist, a 7-XL in the shirt and very lazy. I was driving a Cadillac DeVille and had to have the driver’s seat moved back at an automotive shop. When I went by other people’s houses, I was always breaking chairs and furniture. It was very embarrassing. I was falling asleep at red lights.

ATLANTA — The pharmacy that distributed a steroid linked to an outbreak of fungal meningitis has issued a voluntary recall of all of its products, calling the move a precautionary measure.
The New England Compounding Center announced the recall Saturday. The company said in a news release that the move was taken out of an abundance of caution because of the risk of contamination. It says there is no indication that any other products have been contaminated.
