To discover the deepest mysteries of the universe, no ordinary computer will do. Solving some of the most challenging computer science problems — notably toward the advancement of machine learning — will require quantum computing. To that end, Google announced that it is launching the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab with NASA’s Ames Research Center, which will host the lab.
This facility will house a new quantum computer from D-Wave Systems and the Universities Space Research Association. Researchers from around the world will share time on it, with the common goal of studying how quantum computing might advance machine learning.

In the “Star Trek” TV shows and films, the U.S.S. Enterprise’s warp engine allows the ship to move faster than light, an ability that is, as Spock would say, “highly illogical.”
However, there’s a loophole in Einstein’s general theory of relativity that could allow a ship to traverse vast distances in less time than it would take light. The trick? It’s not the starship that’s moving — it’s the space around it.
In fact, scientists at NASA are right now working on the first practical field test toward proving the possibility of warp drives and faster-than-light travel. Maybe the warp drive on “Star Trek” is possible after all. [See also: Warp Drive: Can It Be Done? (Video)]
According to Einstein’s theory, an object with mass cannot go as fast or faster than the speed of light. The original “Star Trek” series ignored this “universal speed limit” in favor of a ship that could zip around the galaxy in a matter of days instead of decades. They tried to explain the ship’s faster-than-light capabilities by powering the warp engine with a “matter-antimatter” engine. Antimatter was a popular field of study in the 1960s, when creator Gene Roddenberry was first writing the series. When matter and antimatter collide, their mass is converted to kinetic energy in keeping with Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence formula, E=mc2.

Just when you thought the 3D gun was dead, it’s back. Just Thursday, the company that made the 3D gun blueprints, Defense Distributed, was forced to take the blueprints off of its site by the U.S. Department of State.
The issue, then? The plans had already been downloaded over 100,000 times before it was taken down and quickly ended up on Pirate Bay.
There gun has been uploaded to torrenting site Pirate Bay multiple times, and has been downloaded from the site thousands of times.
There is really no way to stop the spread of the 3D gun. Now that the blueprints have made their to Pirate Bay there is no way they’re being taken off. “TPB has for close to 10 years been operating without taking down one single torrent due to pressure from the outside. And it will never start doing that,” A Pirate Bay insider told TorrentFreak, which first pointed out the 3D gun on the now-Icelandic site. The only thing that’s currently stopping more 3D guns from being printed is the limited availability of 3D printers themselves.

In the next five years or so, scientists are poised to discover proof that space and time can wrinkle in the form of gravitational waves. These waves were predicted almost 100 years ago by Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, but have yet to be seen.
That could change soon when the latest, most sensitive experiments hunting gravitational waves come online. “There’s so much activity and excitement in the field right now,” said Mansi M. Kasliwal, an astronomer at the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Pasadena, Calif. “The momentum is really building.”
Kasliwal is the author of a paper published online today (May 2) in the journal Science describing the burgeoning field of gravitational wave studies.

If you live on the East Coast between Georgia and Connecticut, get ready for the air to be filled with billions of large, buzzing insects known as cicadas, a massive brood of which have been feeding on roots underground for the past 17 years — all in preparation for this one moment.
A small number of the “Brood II” cicadas, which are one of seven different species of the insect, have already begun emerging in some eastern states, according to Magicicada.org, a website run by John Cooley, a cicada expert and research scientist at the University of Connecticut.
By the end of May, the inch-and-a-half-long insects will come out in full force, swarming in massive, noisy clouds up and down the eastern seaboard, reports CBS New York.

If a squat, cardboard-framed robot with a high-pitched voice started asking you questions, would you answer it? Would you share your troubles? Unload your concerns?
Many people would — at least, that’s what roboticist and artist Alex Reben has found. He unleashed the smiling bot Boxie in the halls of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to see what people would share with a robot. His work and other research suggest we’re not so averse to bearing our souls to the bots. In some cases, we’ll even tell them things we wouldn’t admit to each other.
In fact, Reben suggests robots and dogs aren’t so different.
“Dogs are basically a human invention. They’re a technology,” Reben told HuffPost Live. “We’ve bred them to be companions over millennia, just like we’re designing robots, we’ve designed dogs to be companions.”

We know what you’re thinking: The only thing missing from my ridiculously expensive, excessively tricked-out toilet is a USB port. Well it’s time you welcomed your posh posterior to the 21st century, because Kohler’s just released the second edition of its now $6,000 throne: the aptly named Numi Comfort Height. In addition to the aforementioned port, which will enable quicker software updates, the outfit has enhanced the commode with a Bluetooth receiver for streaming tunes to your tush; SD card reader for importing playlists and personalized welcome greetings; an accessible battery pack for flushing in the dark; and ambient lighting so you can keep the party going when it’s time to take care of business. If that wasn’t enough to elevate your toilet time, Kohler’s lifted the seat to a more comfortable 18 inches, which it says “makes sitting down and standing up easier for most adults.”

It is one of the cosmos’ most mysterious unsolved cases: dark matter. It is supposedly what holds the universe together. We can’t see it, but scientists are pretty sure it’s out there.
Led by a dogged, Nobel Prize-winning gumshoe who has spent 18 years on the case, scientists put a $2 billion detector aboard the International Space Station to try to track down the stuff. And after two years, the first evidence came in Wednesday: tantalizing cosmic footprints that seem to have been left by dark matter.
But the evidence isn’t enough to declare the case closed. The footprints could have come from another, more conventional suspect: a pulsar, or a rotating, radiation-emitting star.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) released its wide-ranging “autopsy” report on Monday, admitting some of its shortcomings after losing the 2012 presidential election.
Coined the Growth and Opportunity Project, the document includes market research from voter focus groups around the country.
“Asked to describe Republicans, they said that the Party is “scary,” “narrow minded,” and “out of touch” and that we were a Party of “stuffy old men.” This is consistent with the findings of other post-election surveys,” the report states.
