An eastern Pennsylvania woman who fatally stabbed her fiance on their wedding day – and then apparently could not comprehend that he had died – was convicted of first-degree murder on Thursday.
Jurors found Na Cola Franklin, 32, guilty after deliberating about three hours in Lehigh County Court. She could get life in prison when she is sentenced July 16. Her attorney said an appeal is likely.
Prosecutors say Franklin and 36-year-old Billy Brewster got into the deadly argument on Aug. 11 around 2 a.m. in their Whitehall Township apartment. They were scheduled to be married at 10 a.m. in neighboring Allentown.
At her arraignment that night, Franklin appeared distraught and confused to learn Brewster was dead, telling the judge, “You got to check again!”

A woman who thought her family was being stalked by “demonic presences” killed her two children in a southern Indiana creek before she also drowned, police said Friday.
Police had released little information after body of Jaime Clutter, 35, was found in March, along with the bodies of her 10-year-old son, Brandon, and 6-month-old daughter, Katelyn. The naked bodies were recovered in a park less than a mile from where the family lived in New Albany, a city along the Ohio River just west of Louisville, Ky. Their clothing was found strewn in the creek.
New Albany Police Chief Sherri Knight said during a news conference Friday that mental illness, including postpartum depression, was the underlying factor in the deaths. Knight added that authorities didn’t know whether Clutter committed suicide or downed by accident, noting that “hypothermia was a significant contributing factor” in her death.

When Jaime Moore’s daughter, Emma, turned 5, the Texas mom and photographer set out to commemorate the occasion in pictures. Searching for inspiration online, however, she was dismayed to find the majority of girls at that age dressed up, unrealistically, as fairy-tale princesses. So Jaime decided to raise the bar.
Mom searched for better role models, and together with Emma selected five real women that a girl can actually aspire to be like. Then, they replicated iconic portraits of those figures — Susan B. Anthony, Coco Chanel, Amelia Earhart, Helen Keller and Jane Goodall.
The title of the series, “NOT just a girl,” is meant to be an inspirational message for young women seeking to realize their full potential — beyond vague dreams of Disney princesses.

Breaking a world record is a huge accomplishment for any athlete, but 16-year-old Kayla Wheeler has managed to do it with no legs and only one arm.
The high school student from Washington was born with three congenital amputations, according to KCPQ. She took to swimming at a young age as a form of physical therapy. Today, she’s a Paralympic swimming champion — and currently holds the world record in the 50 meter butterfly.
“It’s kind of indescribable,” her mother, Joyce Wheeler, told KCPQ. “When they announce her name and she’s representing the United States I get goose bumps all over. I’m so amazed that’s my child.”

If y’all need a quick course on how stuff Southern Women say this video pretty much covers the finer points of a southern woman’s vocabulary. Since I live in the South this was pretty much like listening to a group of Moms talking at a kids sporting event. If you want to see another fine example of a Southern Lady talking watch Understanding Southern.

A robot as small as a housefly has managed the delicate task of flying and hovering the way the actual insects do.
“This is a major engineering breakthrough, 15 years in the making,” says electrical engineer Ronald Fearing, who works on robotic flies at the University of California, Berkeley. The device uses layers of ultrathin materials that can make its wings flap 120 times a second, which is on a par with a housefly’s flapping rate. This “required tremendous innovation in design and fabrication techniques”, he adds.
The robot’s wings are composed of thin polyester films reinforced with carbon fibre ribs and its ‘muscles’ are made from piezoelectric crystals, which shrink or stretch depending on the voltage applied to them.

Bertrand Piccard is somewhere high over central California right now, flying southward in a giant airplane powered only by the sun.
Piccard is the co-founder and pilot of Solar Impulse, a solar powered airplane that left Moffett Field south of San Francisco shortly after 6 a.m. PDT today to begin an eight-week journey across the country. As impressive as that sounds, it is but a trial run for the dream he and fellow pilot André Borschberg have been working toward since 2007: a zero-emissions flight around the world in 2015.
The longest journey, as they say, begins with the first step, which for Piccard ends after midnight tonight when he touches down in Phoenix. He and his crew have spent several weeks in California, assembling and testing the aircraft after having it flown from Switzerland aboard a Boeing 747.

Doctors in Virginia made science history on Monday when they successfully completed a first-of-its-kind surgical procedure to separate six-month-old conjoined twin girls.
The 14-hour operation was performed at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU in Virginia, where the girls are now in stable condition.
A’zhari and A’zhiah Jones of Franklin, Virginia, were born as so-called thoracopagus twins, meaning their bodies were fused at the abdomen and that they had heart abnormalities.
The first stage of the Jones twins’ phased separation began in October 2012, when surgeons divided their shared liver, and then closed the girls’ abdomens back up.

A small robot has uncovered three 2,000-year-old chambers under an ancient temple in Mexico, archaeologists from the National Anthropology and History Institute announced this week.
The robot, named Tlaloc II-TC after Mexico’s ancient god of rain, found the chambers under the Temple of the Feathered Serpent (also called the Temple of Quetzalcoatl) in the Mesoamerican ruins of Teotihuacan, which is just 30 miles from Mexico City. The ancient city, thought to have been established around 100 BC, had more than 100,000 inhabitants at its peak, but had long been abandoned before the Aztecs arrived in the 1300s.
