I have never seen anything like this before.  Super talented.

His portrayals of older, “ordinary” people are magnificent.

 These are truly works of art. I have never seen anything so realistic and especially considering what is used to make them.

The Mona Lisa is arguably the most famous painting in the world. Have you ever wondered why? Leonardo Da Vinci was masterful at manipulating our own visual shortcomings to make us feel something beautiful, complicated, even unsettling. There’s just something about her smile.

Dr. Margaret Livingstone, a visual neurophysiologist at Harvard, knows this all too well. I recently spoke with her about how our visual systems have evolved to process one of the inventions that sets us apart from non-human animals–art.

Lisa Nilsson’s Paper Art Inspired By Virtual Human Project’s Cadaver Cross-Sections (SLIDESHOW)

A series of paper sculptures by Lisa Nilsson, an artist based in North Adams, Mass., was inspired by the Visible Human Project–a 1994 NIH initiative in which the body of a convicted murderer was frozen and then cut into nearly, 2,000 cross-sectional slices which were then digitized and put online. The idea behind the project was to create a highly detailed “virtual cadaver” to facilitate scientific inquiry.

Call it the intersection between anatomy and art.

The Scream Auction: Edvard Munch’s Painting Sells For $119.9 Million, Sets A World Record (LIVEBLOG)

Edvard Munch’s iconic work, “The Scream,” broke a world record tonight, becoming the most expensive artwork sold in an auction.

Estimates for the sale varied from $80 million to $200 million. The artwork — which is not a painting but is pastel on board — ended up selling for $119,922,500, surpassing the previous record-holder, Picasso’s “Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust,” which sold for $106.5 million in 2010. Cezanne’s “The Card Players” has the honor of going for the highest price, period (meaning not at auction) — it was sold in a private sale to Qatar (yes, the country) for $250 million last year.
